Concealed Handgun Permits

We accept all new and renewal concealed handgun permit applications on a walk-in basis on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Please arrive no later than 3:30 p.m. to allow adequate processing time. CHP will be closed for lunch between 11 a.m.–12 p.m., depending on volume.

New Permits

CHP New Permit Applicants, make sure you have the following paperwork with you:

• Training (any one of the following)
  • Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions, or current military service (example: Common Access Card);
  • Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, you are a certified firearms instructor;
  • Proof of Honorable Discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces within the last 3 years (example: DD-214 Member 4);
  • Proof of Honorable Discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces that reflects pistol qualifications that is less than 10 years old (example: DD214 Member 4 -- this means the DD214 must be less than 10 years, and the pistol qualification also must be less 10 years old);
  • Certificate showing retirement from a Colorado Law Enforcement Agency that reflects pistol qualification obtained with the last 10 years;
  • Original training certificate signed by certified instructor, less than 10 years old
    • (Bring the original. If you bring a photocopy, the photocopy must contain an ORIGINAL signature, meaning the certified instructor physically signed the photocopy)
• New Permit Application
• Colorado Driver’s License*

*If you are currently in the military, and stationed here in Colorado on Duty Orders, and do not have a Colorado Driver’s License, bring your current state ID and a copy of your Duty Orders. We may also ask for a current utility bill, lease or other paperwork that shows you are living at the address you put on the application.

Renewal

CHP Renewal/Out of County Renewals, make sure you have the following paperwork with you:

• CHP Permit
• Renewal Permit Application (we can notarize it here for no additional fee)
• Colorado Driver’s License*

*If you are currently in the military, and stationed here in Colorado on Duty Orders, and do not have a Colorado Driver’s License, bring your current state ID and a copy of your Duty Orders. We may also ask for a current utility bill, lease or other paperwork that shows you are living at the address you put on the application.

Pricing

• For new permits, there is a non-refundable $152.50 processing fee.
• For renewal permits, there is a non-refundable $63 processing fee.
• There is a $15 late fee for any permit that has expired. No permit shall be renewed six months or more after its expiration date and the permit shall be deemed permanently expired.

Payment can be made by cash, check, money order or credit/debit card (We do not accept American Express).

By law, the sheriff has ninety (90) days from receipt of your application to perform a background check and either approve or deny your request for a concealed handgun permit. It could take up to ninety (90) days to complete the background check and notify you that your permit is ready to pick up. 

Common Problems

Here are some commonly seen problems when applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit:

• Do you have the original signed training certificate from the class you took?
  • It must be the original, or if it is a photocopy, the photocopy must have been physically signed by the instructor.
  • If your instructor sent your certificate to you via email, and you printed it off from an email, it is not an original.
  • If it is a carbon copy from a multi-layered form (pink copy, yellow copy, etc), it is not an original.
• Did you take your training class in person?
  • Online classes are not acceptable as training in Colorado.
• Was the class taken within the last 10 years?
  • Per Colorado law, the certificate must be less than 10 years old.
• Have you completed the correct permit application?
  • New Application (Download the New Permits application, print it, fill it out, don’t sign it)
  • Renewal Application (Download the Renewal Permits application, print it, fill it out, and do not sign it until you are in front of a notary. We have notary here on staff, or you can get it notarized in advance)
• Do you have your Colorado Driver’s License or Colorado State ID card?
  • You must be a resident of the state of Colorado to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit, unless you are currently serving in the armed forces, and here on Duty Orders.*
• Is the address on your Colorado Driver’s License up to date?
  • If it does not show the correct address on the license, you should make sure it is up to date with the Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles by going to their website.
• Do you live in Arapahoe County?
  • If you do not live in Arapahoe County, you will need to apply for your permit from the county in which you reside.**

*If you are currently in the military, and stationed here in Colorado on Duty Orders, and do not have a Colorado Driver’s License, bring your current state ID and a copy of your Duty Orders. We may also ask for a current utility bill, lease or other paperwork that shows you are living at the address you put on the application.

**Per state law, if you have an Arapahoe County permit and live in another county, you must renew in the county in which you reside. If you live in Arapahoe County and have a permit from another county, you need to renew in Arapahoe County. If you maintain a secondary residence, or own or lease real property used in a business in Arapahoe County, you may be eligible to apply for a new or renewal in Arapahoe County.

Verified Instructor Applicants CRS 18-12-202.7:

Those seeking to become a verified instructor or renew their verified instructor status in Arapahoe County under CRS 18-12-202.7, please review this information packet before applying. When you are ready to apply, download and print this application and certification of compliance. This application is only for individuals qualified to instruct on firearms and plan to teach the Concealed Handgun Training Class and/or the Refresher Class.

NEW application for Verified Instructor non-refundable processing fee = $100.00

RENEWAL application for Verified Instructor non-refundable processing fee = $50.00

Once the application and all required documents (listed on the application) are gathered, pay the required fee and submit in one of three ways (You must attach a copy of your receipt with your verified instructor application):         

Option 1: Electronically via our online payment portal and email the completed application and all supporting documents to CHP@5054k.com .

Option 2: Print the completed application and all supporting documents and bring them to the Sheriff’s Office in person, pay with cash, check, or card (AmEx not accepted).  Lobby hours are Mondays ~ Fridays 7:00 am ~ 5:00 pm. It is recommended that you put all of your documents into a folder or envelope with attention: Concealed Handgun Permit – Verified Instructor Program.

Once we have received the application materials, a review will take place, and applicants may be contacted by our staff with follow-up questions.
